Contractor Derek ‘Skinny’ Wilson is a headache in Region Ten

CONTRACTOR Derek ‘Skinny’ Wilson is quite famous in Region Ten. For either not
completing projects or handing over very shoddy work.
The latest example of the former is the non-completion of a project in Kwakwani, Upper
Demerara/Berbice (Region Ten) which Regional Executive Officer (REO) Mr. Dwight John
recently assured will be completed in the new year.
Regional Chairman, Deron Adams at the recent statutory meeting of the Regional Democratic
Council (RDC) grilled John on the completion of the Kwakwani suboffice which he said “is a
long-standing issue”.
The project commenced in 2017 and was anticipated to finish “within a few months”.
John said the RDC will ensure current works are completed in 2021.
“Mr. Chairman what I can assure you is that the incomplete works will be completed in 2021.
We want to get past this outstanding issue. I was not here as you all know and therefore, I am not
familiar with the issues that surrounded it. However, the Regional Engineer will be better able to
update this Council,” he said.
When questioned about the incomplete ‘Skinny’ project, Regional Engineer, Mr Elford Les
Flores was quite blunt.
“The contract was terminated because of the non-performance of the contractor at the time,” the
engineer told the RDC.
‘Skinny’ Wilson’s firm, Alterative Construction Enterprise, despite receiving a sizeable portion
of the contract cost has remained recalcitrant.
An RDC source reiterated that Wilson has been a constant defaulter on bids that he won and also
underperforming.
“I never knew why he got the contract in the first place as his performance has been below par,
because he is known for providing several substandard works and it had seemed like no one was
capable of telling him that his work was very poor,” the source said.

The source blamed poor monitoring of projects undertaken in the Region for underachievers
such as ‘Skinny’ still securing contracts. In addition, administrators have failed to take strong
action against defaulting contractors causing several of these issues to be either swept under the
carpet and or ignored.
“We deserve better and it is our hope that the REO will see beyond political lines and affiliation
and ensure that those executing contracts do them to the highest professional standards. Quality
and standard are of paramount importance and the people of Region Ten deserve better. You just
can’t be throwing away tax-payers’ monies to someone who has a track record of failing. I trust
that some systems would be implemented so that persons like ‘Skinny’ and others would know
that the Rsegion will no longer be accepting their poor work,” the source said.
Meanwhile, www.aroundtheregions.com was reliably informed that Wilson is trying to avoid
blacklisting by hiding under a different business name.
“The fear is that he will get someone to front for him as he is determined to get contracts and I
trust that the Region, and more so, the REO, ensure that proper reviewing systems are
implemented,” the source added.
