13 Amerindian communities benefit from mines ranger training

Thirteen Amerindian communities are participating in a Community Mines Ranger training program facilitated by the Guyana Mining School and Training Center INC (GMSTC) under the Ministry of Natural Resources.

This programme aims to establish qualified rangers within Amerindian titled lands, enhance technical skills, promote an understanding of mining regulations and guidelines, and improve compliance within the sector.

The communities benefitting from this initiative include Arukamai, Kokerite, Chinese Landing, Jawalla, Kamarang, Kako, Kangaruma, Tasserene, Turungbang, Kanapang, Achawib, Aishalton and Parabara.

These communities were selected by the Ministry of Natural Resources based on recommendations from the National Toshaos Conference (NTC) in August 2024.

The training curriculum consists of four modules, including GPS Navigation (training on the Garmin 78s GPS device, covering navigation, waypoint saving, and track function utilization).

It also covered Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) in Mining (providing essential OSH knowledge relevant to Community Mines Rangers in the Guyanese mining industry), and Regulations (covering legal regulations for Rangers and miners within their area of supervision).

Upon completion, the Community Rangers will be equipped to enforce regulations and promote responsible and safe mining practices within their communities.

This successful programme is now in its third year, providing employment opportunities for residents and stimulating economic growth within these communities.
