The Regional Democratic Council (RDC) Region Ten have awarded over fifty million dollars’
worth in contracts. The awarding of these contracts was done last Friday at the Regional Tender
Board meeting.
Sources within the RDC pointed out that the awarding of these contracts is an indication of
government’s commitment to ensure that Region Ten benefits significantly from economic
development. The source told www.aroundtheregions.com that the awarding of the ten major
contracts thus far will greatly boost the region, while enhancing and helping to create job
security and employment.
“The awarding of these ten big contracts is definitely welcome and we remain confident that the
people of Region Ten will certainly benefit. Further, it is a testimony of Government’s
commitment and dedication to ensure that there is development and growth in every region
within Guyana and Region Ten will continue to benefit,” the source said.
It was revealed to this media house that the ten awarded contracts form part or the 106 contracts
that are expected to be awarded before the end of 2020. The Regional Tender Board will be
meeting in this Friday and according to well-placed sources a similar number of contracts will be
issued with the total value surpassing last week.
www.aroundtheregoons.com learnt that there are six evaluators working on the contracts. A
senior official confirmed that former Regional Executive Officer (REO) Gavin Clarke is one of
the six evaluators and owing to his wealth of experience he continues to execute his evaluating
duties timely and quickly. However, it was pointed out that the other five evaluators while they
are doing a great job because they do not have the wealth of experience as the former REO they
have been moving slow, thus delaying the process. “What is happening is that Gavin the former
REO has significant experience in this area and because if that he has been able to get through
his evaluation much more quickly than the others. The others are doing a great job but because
they do not possess the similar level of experience they are slow but we remain confident that
they (evaluators) will get through this process in a timely manner, as REO and the rest of the
Tender Board team wants to award these contacts very quickly,” the senior official elaborated.
It was further revealed that several residents welcome the contracts, stating that it is timely and
useful in boosting Region Ten’s economy considering the impact that COVID and other
financial challenges have done to the region. Some stressed that Government’s attempt to ensure
that there is economic development is a step in the right direction.
“The work being done by the Regional Executive Officer; Dwight John is commendable, and he
should be lauded for his willingness to work with both sides of the divide. This region has long
waited for someone who will set aside their political preference and get the work of the
government done, ultimately benefiting everyone,” a prominent contractor who requested
anonymity said.
The contractor noted that he feels a sense of satisfaction that the awarding of contracts are being
done on a level playing field congratulating the REO and the Regional Tender Board for what he
dubbed as their genuine commitment and dedication.
“Over the years Region Ten residents and contractors have all suffered because the awarding of
several contracts raised many questions. I must say that like many, we are very happy that there
seems to be a more professional approach and award of contracts. I am not saying that the system
is perfect nut what I would like to say is that REO John have a better understanding of what is
needed to advance a region economically and holistically,” the contractor said.
Speaking briefly to www.aroundtheregions.com, REO Dwight John confirmed that several
contracts were awarded, stating that the region remains on target in achieving its 2020 goals.
