President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali believes by cultivating a strong sense of national identity, Guyana can overcome any obstacle and build a brighter future for all its citizens.
The recent outpouring of unity and patriotism suggests that his government’s efforts are bearing fruit and that Guyanese are well-equipped to face challenges.
The head of state at a recent Private Sector Commission (PSC) event noted that in the face of adversity, Guyana has witnessed a remarkable outpouring of national unity and patriotism.
He attributed this to the country’s resilience in the face of external threats, as well as the government’s conscious effort to cultivate a strong sense of national identity, particularly among the youth.
The president pointed to the nation’s united response to aggressive threats from Venezuela and the outpouring of solidarity following the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of five brave soldiers.
The helicopter crash, which occurred in the Mazaruni area, took the lives of Brigadier Gary Beaton, Project Engineer for the Government of Guyana; Colonel Michael Shahoud, Commander of the First Infantry Battalion; Lt. Col Michael Charles, Pilot; Lt. Col Sean Welcome, Commanding Officer of the Reserve Battalion; and Warrant Officer Class II Jason Khan of the 31st Special Forces Squadron.
The nation mourned their loss as one, showcasing the deep sense of shared identity and pride that runs through Guyanese society.
President Ali’s focus on fostering national unity and patriotism extends beyond reacting to challenges. His administration has implemented various initiatives aimed at instilling a strong sense of national values in Guyanese youth.
These initiatives include promoting civic education, supporting cultural events, and celebrating national heroes and historical milestones.
President Ali applauded Guyanese for their unwavering unity deeming it a fundamental force that binds the nation together.
“It cannot be the pain of the moment that drives us together. Pain of the moment teaches us that we have the ability to come together, that we have the ability to love each other, that we have the ability to lift each other up, and that is a valuable lesson,” President Ali asserted.
He observed a surge in national pride, not just through official pronouncements, but in the heartwarming sights of children embracing their heritage.
President Ali urged Guyanese to seize it.
Venezuela’s assertive claims had spurred a nationwide awakening. In response, Guyana launched a comprehensive awareness campaign, fostering a collective sense of unity.
The Circle of Unity event, held at the National Stadium, epitomised this spirit. Schools, businesses, and individuals from all walks of life came together, weaving a tapestry of shared patriotism during a night of reflection. For President Ali, this inclusive response to external threats was a testament to the unshakeable strength of a united Guyana.
