The Region Ten Acting Education Officer, La Shanna Anderson has disclosed that her region
schools are all set and ready for the opening of school next Monday. Minister of Education Hon.
Priya Manickchand had said in a release that the school term will be adjusted, and the school
week may also be extended. Grades 10,11, 12 and 13 will be returning to school on November
9..
Speaking to www.aroundtheregions.com Anderson said that her department has already
completed the final touches to schools in the region, while they are expected to distribute the
care packages to both teachers and students this week.
Endorsing the Minister of Education to reopen school, the Education Officer said that there
continues to be improvement throughout the region in both primary and secondary. She spoke of
the increased numbers achieved by the schools with regards to matriculation.
“We have had increased matriculation throughout with the exception of Mackenzie High that had
a seven percent drop. They dropped from 79 to 72 percent. Harmony Secondary that was
flattening at zero had a three percent increase in matriculation rate, while the other schools
scored double digits increase,” Anderson said.
She disclosed that there were a number of schools who improved significantly. One such school
that was singled out is the New SilverCity Secondary. She said that the school scored a
whopping 28 percent increase in matriculation rate, crediting both teachers and students for what
she described as an all-round excellent performance.
“They had about a 28 percent improvement matriculation rate overall, that is the students
gaining five subjects and more with grades one and two. I must say that New SilverCity
secondary really did well with their 28 percent increase this year,” Anderson noted.
Asked as to if the Region has announced a Regional Top student, the Education Officer said no.
She said this is because of the unresolved issues that Guyana is addressing with CXC. She added
that hopefully Central Ministry will announce its top student shortly and they will follow suit
“Nationally it affected the results from exams and so we are waiting on the permission from
them based on the review before we can announce. This is because they have to announce before
we can announce. In light of that the entire country is waiting,” she explained.
The Education Officer stressed that even to Harmony secondary along with some students at
other secondary schools in the region were affected. This, she said, will be resolved soon and
will see them releasing the region’s top ten after the national top ten is announced.
Anderson in giving a breakdown of the students that will be returning to schools, disclosed that
for Grade 10, there are 833 students, grade 11 will see 485 students, grade 12 will have 32

students and grade 13 will have 36 students. This, she said gives a total of 1,386 students
representing Region Ten.
