Residents welcome repairs to Saw Pit Road

Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Hon. Deodat Indar and Regional Chairman, Mr. Ishan Ayube at the head table during the consultation.

Residents of Saw Pit Road, Goed Intent on the West Bank of Demerara on Monday lauded Government’s plans to rehabilitate the street, which has been in need of repairs for many years.

Mr. Shalim Shariff, a resident of the Saw Pit Area, told DPI he is pleased that Government is on the right path towards ensuring the community develops.

“This road is very important for this area because it is one road alone and we have a lot of things that are done inside here. We will be thankful as soon as this road can start and finish,” Mr. Shariff said.

Another resident, Mr. Imran Hussain bemoaned the road’s condition, saying it hampers him from conducting his business.

“If there is an emergency, and an emergency vehicle has to come in here, that [road] is going to slow up the vehicle… People need the road to fix because that is going to benefit everyone in the area,” Mr. Hussain said.

Both gentlemen lamented that while other roads had been rehabilitated by the former Administration, residents in the Saw Pit Area did not benefit from an all-weather surface road.

For Mr. Moses (only name given) a remigrant pensioner, it was distressing to return to his homeland to live near a road in such disrepair.  He welcomed the planned works as a way of enhancing residents’ living conditions.

The residents’ comments followed a meeting with Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Hon. Deodat Indar who visited the community to give an update on the Government’s plans for infrastructural development.

“[The contract] has already been awarded. So, mobilisation is happening now for that. So, you are supposed to see works begin within days,” the Minister told the residents.

Minister Indar said he plans to visit communities such as Canal Number Two, Leonora, Tuschen and Parika this week to inform them of the planned road works in their areas, and to listen to their concerns.

A meeting was also held in Belle Vue where the Minister committed to rehabilitate a dam and to have the Guyana Water Incorporated address water woes.

Regional Chairman, Mr. Ishan Ayube and technical officers from other ministries also attended the community consultation.
