Region Ten Education Department blazing trail

The Regional Education Department in Region Ten continues to blaze the educational trial. This
year the region came in second to Georgetown after coming in third last year.
Speaking exclusively to www.aroundtheregions.com, acting Regional Education Officer, La
Shanna Anderson spoke about her region’s superb performance at this year’s NGSA
performance.
Anderson disclosed that while they were expecting a higher percentage rate in terms of those
being successful, she firmly believes that there continues to be improvement in the various
subjects and more so, at the various schools within the region.
She said for 2019 in Mathematics they had secured a 51.1 % pass rate, while this year it was
46.7%. She said that in English last year they got 65.6 % with the students this year returning
71.9%. In Science they secured 52.7 last year, while for this year it was 55.2%. she disclosed last
year in Social Studies it was 47.4% with this year the students turning in 61.7%
Anderson noted that considering the many difficulties and challenges faced with COVID 19, her
department feels satisfied that they have improved overall. She admitted that backed by teachers,
support staff and parents, they are working towards reducing those challenges. This, she said,
resulted in Region Ten snatching the number two sport from Region Three, which had to revert
to taking the number three position.
Anderson said that while they cannot deliver their lessons face to face, they have managed to
implement creative ways, which she credited to be working very well thus far. She related that
the google classroom and zooms are being used thus far in ensuring that students throughout the
region are able to access classes.
“We have a very challenging situation; part of the region is riverain so what will work in one
area wouldn’t work in another area. So, for those in Linden they are accessing both zoom and
google classrooms. However, for those in Sub Region Two and the Berbice River they have
placed a box where the lessons are delivered to them. After working on the lessons, it is picked
up by our staff to be marked and returned,” Anderson said.
The acting REdO expressed the firm view that considering the passion and determination by all
within her region to push academic development. She said that her department is also engaging
the Ministry of Health, where they engage health centers that are in close proximity to schools
and they are also assisting.
“These health centres are assisting with distribution and other areas, to ensure that the students
can continue to access education in many ways. We intend to utilize whatever system and avenue
that we can to ensure that all students benefit,” she stressed.

Anderson said that she remains confident that her region will improve significantly next year.
This, she stressed is evident considering the enormous work and system being implemented to
better equip both teachers and students as they combat the pandemic together.
“I am confident that we will do better next year and we are implementing systems that will
ensure this, thus we are working with every school, teacher and those that are expected to play a
role in this process,” she said.
