FAILURE FOLLOWED THE TEAM UNITY government throughout their seven-year tenure and returning the Timothy Harris slate to power is dangerous, warned Constituency Five representative Mr. Kenny Douglas.
Douglas, an opposition St Kitts and Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) candidate, speaking at a recent campaign rally reminded supporters that the three-party Team Unity Peoples Labour Party (PLP) “failed as a coalition; failed as a government and if re-elected they will fail again.”
The Constituency Five representative reminded those in attendance how crooked and debauched the incumbent Harris administration was throughout their seven-year rule.
‘“They are filled with greed, nepotism, cronyism (and a) selfish approach among other things and you shouldn’t trust them. For the past seven years St Kitts and Nevis had a government that enriched themselves, while squandering the country’s resources and you must never vote for them again,” Douglas counselled.
Peoples Action Movement (PAM) leader Shawn Richards being appointed Deputy Prime Minister in the three-party Team Unity Coalition but was subsequently fired after skipping several cabinet meetings over a 90-day period after he grew disaffected by the maladministration of his government.
Richards and five other cabinet ministers pulled out of the coalition triggering the government’s spectacular collapse.
Harris, a highly-trained accountant, trying to keep his government on life support, fired the six dissenting ministers, tried reshuffling his comatose cabinet to stave off doubts and revive party and national confidence.
But a favourable no confidence motion (NCM) forced the reluctant head of government to announce polls three years ahead of its original constitutionally due date.
“Comrades do not reward failure with your votes as that is what Richards is asking you to do,” Douglas told his listeners.
“He (Shawn Richards) told you that they failed as a government and now that the coalition is no more, he is coming to beg you to vote for him, while telling you that he was never part of the corruption, cronyism, nepotism and failure,” Douglas thundered.
Historically, Constituency Five has been loyal to the People’s Action Movement (PAM), one-third of the ruling PLP coalition. Nevertheless, Douglas argued that Friday’s polls are too vital for St Kitts and Nevis for ballots to be cast purely on sentiments.
“Now isn’t the time to become sentimental and emotional, but rather practical and honest,” Douglas reasoned in his campaign address.
He reminded his audience it was under successive SKNLP administrations that massive development was achieved in every sector between 1995 and 2015 when Dr Denzil Douglas was Prime Minister.
“Parliamentary Representative (Richards) has truly failed you the people. He failed to provide jobs for you. He failed to provide adequate supply of houses. He failed to keep the one-laptop programme operational, He failed to show up for work for almost 90 days.”
“So, why should you support this failed man?” Douglas queried rhetorically.
