Regional Chairman of the East Berbice-Corentyne, (Region Six), David Armogan declared that
health centres and hospitals across the region received significant infrastructural development in
2021.
Armogan said that the upgrades to the medical institutions demonstrate government’s
commitment to ensuring citizens receive medical attention in a comfortable environment.
Armogan in a recent interview disclosed that assessments were conducted at health facilities
across the districts, which found structures in deplorable conditions.
He revealed that Region Six has almost 30 health centres, with three district hospitals, along with
the New Amsterdam Regional Hospital. He noted that in some instances, there were hardly seats
available for persons and they were uncomfortable visiting some facilities to seek medical
attention.
Armogan pointed out that finance was made available through the Office of the Vice President,
Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, to add to the region’s health transformation. “If you start with Bohemia,
Cumberland and you go down the line, you will see works at most of the health centers have
been completed. Work is still ongoing at a few of them. But these are major works that were
done,” he explained.
The Regional Chairman said the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) has a strategic plan to
ensure all health facilities are equipped and have the basic drugs to provide immediate service to
the populace. “We will also be providing those health centres with the basic medications for
things like diabetes, high blood pressure, and some of the other non-communicable diseases. So,
people, especially pregnant mothers, and even the men could utilise these health centers,”
Armogan detailed.
Additionally, the RC said the region’s drug bond is being extended to store medications received
from the Materials Management Unit (MMU). He disclosed that the outpatient department of the
hospital in Black Bush Polder is also being extended, while remedial work is advancing at the
Port Mourant District Hospital.
RC Armogan noted that the RDC intends to maintain a conducive health environment at the
regional hospital, ensuring that medical practitioners and other staff work effectively, to reduce
the waiting time for persons seeking medical attention. “All these things we are putting in place
to make our population more comfortable and be able to offer a better quality of service to the
people of our region,” he said. Armogan stressed that the region’s quick response committee
organised by President Irfan Ali, remains active and continues to address problems affecting
residents.
