A CITY BUSINESSMAN has donated some $5M worth in hampers to several less-fortunate
families for the Christmas holidays.
Businessman Satyendra Khemraj, Managing Director of The New Doctor’s Clinic, Lot 5 B
Garnett Street, Newtown, said the donations were part of “my responsibility to give back” and
was elated making a meaningful difference in the lives of residents from several communities.
Khemraj, known for his free-handedness, has been quietly supporting several causes among a
number of organizations and institutions. The hardships faced by many, especially those in
underserved communities, goaded Khemraj to open his bowels of compassion further following
afflictions unleashed by the Coronavirus pandemic which has so far killed more than five million
globally including 1,050 in Guyana.
New Amsterdam Hospital, residents of Fort Island, Khemraj’s birth place, and members of
Suddie in Region Two, (Pomeroon/Supenaam) and others living at Mon Repos, on the East
Coast Demerara, Region Four (Demerara/Mahaica) also benefitted from the businessman’s
largesse.
While Khemraj has been donating to the less fortunate for many years, this year he focused on
distributing hampers that consisted of a variety of food items. The assortment was necessary, the
businessman explained, because he decided to target the country’s hard-working nurses, a virtual
citadel as frontline workers battling the ongoing pandemic.
“This year I have decided to take special consideration and interest in the nurses since it’s a
pandemic and they have been working beyond the call of duty. Further, with the global hike in
shopping and prices have gone up for most items, I have seen it fit to assist with food hampers,”
Khemraj said.
Several beneficiaries lauded the businessman’s gesture, some describing it as a holiday
“lifeline”.
“He has certainly helped many of us to have a Christmas considering that many of us are
unemployed and are unsure as to our future. As such, we are very happy and thankful for his help
as most of us have children depending upon us and to know that we can have some meals from
this hamper is commendable.”
“We want to continue expressing our thanks as this is not just any hamper but a really solid
hamper,” a beneficiary said.
Khemraj was touched by the peoples’ sentiments, witnessing, firsthand the appreciative smiles
and hearing the many stories of how significant and important the hampers are to them.
“I believe in giving and sharing and once the resources are there and I can lend a helping hand, I
will give because its better to give than to receive. As a businessman, my priority is not to make
money, but rather help the society. That is what I have remained focused upon,” Khemraj,
reiterated.
