Minister within the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, Anand Persaud MP on Wednesday presented a subvention cheque valued $9 million to the Mabaruma Town Council for its infrastructural work.
At the simple ceremony held at the Local Government Ministry, Minister Persaud highlighted the programmes to be completed in the region.
“There are a number of projects that they will start and complete, for instance the phase two continuation of Thomas hill multi-purpose building, construction of Barimanobo multi-purpose building, upgrade to Aruka Mouth water system, repairs to airstrip terminal building and sanitary block, grade and shape of auxiliary road- Mabaruma Compound and a few other projects.”
He said the programmes will create employment for residents of Mabaruma.
“Employment must come from Mabaruma. His Excellency, the President has been telling contractors and his government that we need to facilitate monies that are being spent in various regions to facilitate workers from said region – or community” he said.
Meanwhile, Mayor of Mabaruma, His Worship Chris Phang extended gratitude to the Ministry and the Government for the funds.
“I must say it is an honor and a privilege to be here to receive part of our subvention for the year 2021. This money which we are about to receive will be going to certain prioritised projects that the council would have identified. So, I must say thanks to the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development and thanks to the Government of Guyana.”
The Town Council will receive the remaining 50 per cent of the subvention later this year.
