Member of Parliament (M.P.), Hon. Faizal Jafferally, today, unveiled several development plans for Demerara-Mahaica (Region Five) explaining that urgent rehabilitative work has already started.
The Government M.P. made this statement in his opening remarks, today, during the debate of the 2020 Budget at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC) in Liliendaal.
Mr Jafferally said the Government was already addressing issues affecting farmers in the region. He recalled that when Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Zulfikar Mustapha visited communities there several farmers expressed concerns about their crops.
He told the House that canals within the Mahaica Mahaicony Abary – Agricultural Development Authority (MMA-ADA), were not desilted in five years and that the dams were in poor condition. The Parliamentarian said 13 heavy-duty machines are currently in the backlands desilting 245 canals to bring relief to the farmers. The dams are also being graded so that rice farmers could transport their crops to the factory.
M.P. Jafferally also announced that the Government plans to rehabilitate sidelines dams, schools, roads, bridges, and other infrastructure.
